The challenge

The municipality of Vlissingen is developing the ambitious project Yacht Valley (EU Program Interreg IV A2 Seas). The purpose of the Yacht Valley project is to build a new marina with nautical service centers for the development of sustainable water sports. The planning area is realized on a peninsula near Flushing's current marina. The bank protections along the Channel through Walcheren were dilapidated and showed severe weaknesses. Wind waves and shipping currents have damaged the bank protections for years. Hence, the municipality decided to restore all bank protections.

Our contribution

Walhout Civil has prepared all the designs for the bank protections, and prepared a heavy layer of concrete blocks with an overlay construction of asphalt. Our engineers designed these sustainable, watertight bank protections to prevent displacement of severe soil contamination. As a result, contaminated water can no longer freely flow into the open Channel through Walcheren. We took care of the daily supervision during all execution works. The execution of more than 750 meter of bank protection was successful completed in 2013. The development of the Yacht Valley site can finally be started. A summery of our activities:

  • Hydraulic boundary conditions and research
  • Final design of bank protections with overlay
  • Investigation of conventional explosives and soil contamination
  • Permits, procurement and contracting
  • Project consultancy and execution supervision
  • Tests and inspections
  • Aftercare for years (2013-2017)
